A luminous study of Bethesda Fountain, crowned by Emma Stebbins’ Angel of the Waters — the first major public sculpture commissioned from a woman in New York City.

The bronze angel, wings extended above the cascading basin, commemorates the Croton Aqueduct, which in 1842 brought fresh water to Manhattan and transformed public health in the growing city. Below, the terrace and fountain form the architectural heart of Central Park.

In the foreground, a couple pause at the stone ledge — a quiet human moment set against civic monumentality. The composition contrasts scale and intimacy: monumental allegory above, contemporary life below.
